Stuttgart might not have been the first German city you think about when talking about German startups, but that might change very soon! The Stuttgart region is an industrial powerhouse and is working hard to make itself a prime nesting ground for startups. Both students looking for meaningful internships and young professionals looking to make an impact should definitely consider Stuttgart as their next destination. Let’s find out why.

Startup region Stuttgart

Stuttgart is home to an immense wealth of technological infrastructure, set into place by its local industrial sector made up of large automotive companies like Porsche and Daimler. Of course, there’s more available than just manufacturing and industry, as we’ll see with some of the more green initiatives that call Stuttgart home.

In essence, the business climate in Stuttgart makes the city a prime nurturing ground for B2B startups, rather than a B2C climate like you’ll find in Berlin. With so many industries close to each other, a budding B2B startup will have a much easier time finding customers and companies to partner up with. In fact, Stuttgart innovation platform Code N indicates that more than half of the startups in Stuttgart only have B2B customers.

Stuttgart as a rising star for B2B startups

This industrial diversity is in turn supported by ever-growing startup support institutions and initiatives like Startup campus Stuttgart and innovation platforms like Code N that help startups with funding and the work that comes with setting up a company in general. But, perhaps most importantly, Stuttgart has ample resources that help connect young entrepreneurs and eager business founders with established companies to get their project off the ground.

So let’s slice the Stuttgart startup pie up and take a look at some of the layers and fields that have some interesting players in the game. We’ll look at who’s cool in tech, what’s the latest for manufacturing and logistics and look at some of the more unique and generally interesting startups in Stuttgart.

Stuttgart’s most interesting startups

Whether you’re just interested in startups, looking for a job, internship or simply inspiration, these startups will give you fresh energy, and maybe even spark the passion for you to someday start your own initiative in Stuttgart!

Here are the 8 of the most interesting startups in Stuttgart in 2021!

  • Anydesk: Anydesk is a tech startup focused on software that allows remote and secure access to computers of any kind. This is not only useful for something as simple as working from home, but also has applications for when high end industrial machines need to be diagnosed or fixed, even if the expert is on the other side of the world! Anydesk has seen a big funding round in 2020, so keep a keen eye on their recruitment channels, or go and have a chat with their recruiters to see if there’s a challenge there for you!

  • Laserhub: Lasers used to be the realm of science fiction, but they’re more commonly used these days than most people think. Laserhub has something special, though! It doesn’t really matter which industry you look at, anything to do with manufacturing has a hunger for very precisely machined parts. And that’s where Laserhub comes in! Laserhub uses laser cutters to cut metal parts to order. Useful for companies that don’t produce enough, or aren’t ready to invest in their own laser cutting equipment. This way they still have access to the custom designed and manufactured parts that they need! Also, lasers are cool.

  • New Normal: It’s not all machines and industry in Stuttgart. Actually, NewNormal.eco is looking for the opposite. It’s a marketplace for everyday products that have been curated in terms of ecofriendliness. Their end goal is to help society move towards a circular society where we can live in harmony with the environment. Vendors can follow NewNormal’s guide to get their products a material health certificate. Additionally, vendors can get help to optimise their production processes to use chemicals and materials that are as safe for humans and the environment as possible.

  • 5Analytics: AI is going to be a word you’re going to see more and more of in the next 10 years. 5Analytics is a company that allows large companies to implement AI software into their processes, using machine learning principles to help a company’s data scientists can do their job more efficiently. This type of predictive analytics can help companies make impactful decisions with more certainty and lower risks. So, if you‘re into AI, data science or machine learning, a job or internship at 5analytics might mean a bright future!

  • Swarm logistics: At some point in our lives, we’ve all looked down and watched ants do their thing for a while. Now, imagine what we could do if we could get robots to work together in a similar manner? Well, that’s what Swarm Logistics is working on! In their words, they’re working on ‘Fleet control systems’ that will eventually enable logistics robots to orchestrate their operations fully autonomously. Eventually, this would mean that some of the more boring logistics work can be done by machines, freeing up the humans for the more creative jobs!

  • Bikematch: You’ll notice when you get here, but: Stuttgarters really love their bikes. Not as much as the Dutch or the Danes, but it’s becoming increasingly popular. Enter Bikematch! An app that allows you to purchase mechanical repairs and support services wherever you are. Flat tire? Book repairs in the app, and the repairman will come find you at your home, or even when you’re on the road! They also offer services for E-bikes, and pretty much any local bike-repairman can sign up as an Angel (on wheels, I suppose) to take on jobs when they have time to do so.

  • Styng: Tattoos have been around for centuries, but finding the right artist for your bodily masterpiece is now a lot easier! Sting is building a platform where artists and canvas (yes, that’s you) come together. Artists can show off their skills, style and speciality, while on the other side, the client can find the right artist for the right tattoo. A good tattoo isn’t cheap, and a cheap tattoo isn’t good: so if you want lettering done, find an artist specialised in it! For portraits, it’s even more important. Thankfully Styng now allows you to browse these styles and find the artists that shine in that department. So if you’re inked up to your eyebrows and want to do more for the community, Styng should be receiving your resume!

  • Aucobo: Remember how I mentioned Stuttgart is a great place for startups that look to improve their local industries? Well, Aucobo is right at home in Stuttgart! It’s a startup that is looking to shake up the way people interact with machines in the manufacturing industry. According to them ‘signal lights and static screens are not targeted, cause overstimulation and increase the need for coordination’. To do this, they’ve currently developed special smart watches for personnel to wear, that shows information, such as the maintenance status, shortage of materials or when a machine needs to be cleaned. Much better than waiting to see if a warning light comes on somewhere in a loud, hectic production environment!
