In Spain, every municipality has a list of all registered residents and their addresses. So when you want to live in Valencia for longer than 6 months, you’re legally required to register at the city hall to receive your Spanish empadronamiento.

Empadronamiento (also called padrón) is an official registration document you receive when you notify the city hall where and with whom you’ll be living in Spain.

Why do I need an empadronamiento (also called padrón) in Valencia?

You’ll need an empadronamiento in Valencia for important bureaucratic tasks such as getting your NIE number, registering your children at a public school in Spain, voting in municipal elections, etc.

You need to know how to get the empadronamiento certificate in Valencia because when asked for it, the certificate can't be older than 3 months! If your certificate's no longer valid, you’ll need to ask for a free copy at your local town hall.

What are the requirements to get your empadronamiento in Valencia?

The process of getting your padrón's free and straightforward. You need to collect these documents:

  • Residence card
  • Solicitud de Empadronamiento (application form).
  • Original and copy of the passport
  • Recent utility bill
  • Proof of address:
    • If you rent an apartment, the original and copy of the tenancy agreement
    • If you are the owner of the home, the original and copy of the property deed
    • If you rent a room, autorización expresa, a signed document by your roommate with their ID. If you can’t provide autorización expresa, use the utility bills.

Where to get your empadronamiento in Valencia?

To carry out the process in person, you must make an appointment online or by calling 010/963100010.

Depending on which Valencian neighborhood you live in, you can register in person at one of these town halls:

1.Padró Municipal de València 2. Oficina de Atención Ciudadana Ayuntamiento València 3. Juntas Municipales (Marítim, Trànsits and Abastos)

The town halls are open from Monday to Friday between 8:30-14:00.

Especially during the end of August and the beginning of September, town halls are bustling because of the arrival of many international students to Spain. So make sure you make an appointment on time.

If you’re going get your Valencian empadronamiento online, you’ll need a digital signature from DNI electrónico.

In either situation, the agents will speak Spanish, so make sure you have a friend who speaks Spanish.

  • Your empadronamiento will be valid for 3 months from the date it’s been issued. Ask for a copy from your town hall when you need empadronamiento with a current date.

  1. How often should I update the empadronamiento?
  • EU citizens or permanent residents in Spain must update empadronamiento every 5 years, and non-EU citizens every 2 years if there’s no significant change in their life.
